Gave an oral presentation at Society of Applied Ecological Engineering 2020 Web Research Conference in Tokyo

In light of the spread of the new coronavirus, the 24th Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Ecology and Engineering (in Sapporo) was postponed until next year, but the online research presentation was held on Saturday, December 5, 2020. Our company made an oral presentation on environmental research using environmental DNA analysis.

A Study on the Efficiency of Environmental Surveys in Erosion Control Areas Using Environmental DNA Analysis

Fish surveys in erosion control pipes are often restricted by the large number of survey points, hazardous locations, and the need for many permits and licenses. We have announced the results of our study on the effectiveness of environmental DNA analysis, which analyzes water samples, as a method for fish sampling surveys in erosion control pipes.

(Summary of the study results)

The environmental DNA analysis was able to detect about 77% of the fish species obtained in the multi-year and multi-seasonal collection surveys by analyzing 1L water samples once a season. Environmental DNA analysis confirmed rare species that could not be confirmed by collection.

When the number of survey sites is large (e.g., more than 10 sites), the cost of the survey using environmental DNA analysis is estimated to be lower than that of the sampling survey under the condition that the fish survey is conducted in the erosion control pipe, which takes time to move.
